Ingredients Glossary

At Artisanal Organic Beauty, we believe you deserve to know exactly what's going on your skin. Every ingredient we use is chosen with intention — for its purity, efficacy, and compatibility with your skin's natural biology. Here's a guide to some of the key botanicals and naturals you'll find in our formulas.

Aloe Vera

A powerhouse plant known for its deeply hydrating and soothing properties. Aloe vera calms inflammation, accelerates healing, and delivers moisture without a greasy feel — making it ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Argan Oil

Rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, argan oil nourishes and softens skin while providing a luminous finish. Often called "liquid gold," it absorbs quickly and is non-comedogenic.

Calendula Extract

Derived from marigold flowers, calendula is prized for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It soothes irritated skin, reduces redness, and supports skin repair — perfect for delicate or reactive complexions.

Chromium Oxide Green (CI 77288)

A naturally derived mineral pigment used to impart green tones in cosmetic formulas. It is non-toxic, stable, and widely regarded as one of the safest colorants for use in eye and face products.

Coconut Oil

A deeply moisturizing oil with natural antimicrobial properties. Coconut oil softens and conditions the skin, locking in hydration and leaving a smooth, supple feel.

Green Tea Extract

Packed with antioxidants called catechins, green tea extract protects skin from environmental damage and premature aging. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits that help calm and brighten the complexion.

Hyaluronic Acid (Plant-Derived)

A naturally occurring molecule that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Our plant-derived hyaluronic acid delivers intense, lasting hydration, plumping fine lines and leaving skin dewy and refreshed.

Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499)

Naturally occurring mineral pigments used to create a range of warm and neutral skin tones in cosmetic formulas. Iron oxides are non-toxic, stable, and free from heavy metal impurities when cosmetic grade, making them a safe choice for all skin types including sensitive skin.

Jojoba Oil

Technically a liquid wax, jojoba closely mimics the skin's natural sebum. It balances oil production, deeply moisturizes, and is suitable for all skin types — including acne-prone skin.

Kaolin (CI 77004)

Also known as French clay, kaolin is a fine white clay mineral that gently absorbs excess oil from the skin's surface without stripping moisture. It helps create a smooth, matte finish and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Manganese Violet (CI 77742)

A safe, inorganic mineral pigment used to add violet and purple tones to cosmetic formulas. It is approved for use in eye, face, and body products and provides excellent color stability.

Mica (Sericite)

A naturally occurring mineral that gives cosmetic formulas their signature silky texture and luminous finish. Sericite mica provides exceptional "slip" — helping products glide smoothly over skin — and contributes a soft-focus, light-diffusing effect.

Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate

A skin-conditioning ester that acts as a binder and stabilizer in pressed powder formulas. It helps bind pigments and minerals together for a smooth, cohesive texture and improves the feel of the product on skin without clogging pores.

p-Anisic Acid

A naturally derived preservative and antimicrobial agent sourced from anise or fennel. It protects cosmetic formulas from microbial contamination while being gentle on skin — a clean alternative to synthetic preservatives like parabens.

Polyethylene Terephthalate

A synthetic polymer used in cosmetics to create ultra-fine particles that impart sparkle and shimmer effects in eye and body products. Cosmetic-grade Polyethylene Terephthalate is used in controlled amounts to achieve visual luminosity.

Rosehip Seed Oil

Cold-pressed from the seeds of wild rose bushes, rosehip oil is rich in vitamins A and C, as well as essential fatty acids. It brightens uneven skin tone, reduces the appearance of scars, and supports collagen production.

Shea Butter

An ultra-nourishing butter extracted from the shea tree nut. Shea butter is intensely moisturizing, rich in vitamins A and E, and creates a protective barrier that locks in hydration and shields skin from environmental stressors.

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite

A lab-created mica alternative that delivers the same silky texture and shimmer as natural mica, with a more consistent particle size and purity. It is free from heavy metal contaminants and offers excellent light-reflecting properties.

Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

A naturally occurring mineral that serves as a gentle opacifier and broad-spectrum SPF protector. In mineral cosmetics, titanium dioxide scatters UV rays, helping to shield skin from sun damage while contributing to a smooth, even complexion.

Ultramarines (CI 77007)

A vibrant, naturally derived mineral pigment used to add blue and violet hues to cosmetic formulas. Ultramarines are approved for use in eye and face products and are known for their excellent stability and safety profile.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

A potent antioxidant that protects skin cells from oxidative damage. Vitamin E also supports skin healing, reduces inflammation, and enhances the stability and efficacy of other active ingredients.

Witch Hazel

A natural astringent derived from the witch hazel plant. It tightens pores, controls excess oil, and soothes irritation — making it a gentle yet effective toner ingredient.

Zinc Stearate

A zinc salt of stearic acid that helps pressed powder formulas adhere to the skin for long-lasting wear. It contributes to a smooth, even application and helps the formula glide on effortlessly.
